![]() ![]() ![]() Despite being written in 2000, the piece reflects some of the positions about Lara’s design that are still talked about decades after her creation - even down to predicting the absurd controversy around the ‘too small’ 2013 reboot. The GameSpot article doesn’t only contribute to the myth, it inadvertently explains why it’s still so prevalent today. To top off the obvious joke, the piece closes with a time-limited offer to trade in your copies of Tomb Raider, for one “where Lara’s chest is said to be noticeably flatter, but neither ‘too large or too small.’" He also disavows any intentional part of the design because he is himself a father of daughters, in a tidy two-for-one in bad conservative arguments of ‘think of the children’ and ‘I respect women, because I myself parent some’. ‘West’ is a mouthpiece who vocally hopes that Lara’s appearance wouldn’t “detrimentally affect” consumer’s buying choices (when we know Tomb Raider was marketed around, and had substantial buy-in from consumers because of, Lara’s sexualised appearance). The piece is satirical, poking fun at both overly-invested fans and the conservative backlash against Lara’s appearance. Meanwhile, Gard’s original interview is in an out-of-print issue of a magazine, and archived on a fansite that is no longer live. This piece is either the top result or cited in the top results for searches about the ‘error’, depending on your phrasing. On April 1 2000, GameSpot published an article titled, Lara Croft’s Breasts “An Awful Mistake”. Related: I Hope The Next Tomb Raider Isn't About Raiding Tombs A few years later, yet another joke contributed a brand new set of quotes to the myth, as well as the ‘coding error’ version of events. As Gard points out, it should be pretty obvious that there’s an undo button, so the second party who issues approval immediately became part of the story to fill in that logic hole. When things don’t add up, or details become fuzzy, new sources add new information. ![]() Some details, such as Gard’s original quote, were reported or paraphrased at the time, at which point those secondary sources became a starting point for the next teller, and so on. Overall, the puzzles are pleasantly challenging, the combat is refined, and the stories are action-packed style journeys that hold true to the Tomb Raider series, despite not being mainline titles. The myth as we know it started as a game of telephone (one that even I’ve taken part in, though I tried to appropriately contextualise it as myth). Regardless of who picks up the Lara Croft Collection, there is definitely still fun to be had, and those who have not previously enjoyed the franchise are actually recommended to give this unique collection a shot as it may be a pleasant surprise. However, given that co-op appears to be the intended gameplay style, this is an opportunity for more experienced players to introduce their friends to the series in a way that may not feel as jarring were they to pick up the titles solo. More casual players of the series, however, may find the gameplay style to be something that feels too different and doesn’t particularly hold their interest.Īdditionally, it is not necessarily the best introduction to Lara Croft for new players, given that this has such a deviated take on how the series is traditionally played and experienced. Those who consider themselves dedicated fans of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft are likely to be pleased with both Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. The Lara Croft Collection is a great addition to the Nintendo Switch library and is a good distraction for those still waiting, hopeful to see the original Tomb Raider games make their Switch debut as well. However, these titles embrace co-op in its most accurate form, meaning that actual teamwork will be necessary to progress, should players choose to utilize the option. The aspect of adding one extra player in Guardian of Light or up to three additional players in Temple of Osiris is something that should be taken advantage of. While these games can both be played solo, Lara Croft’s companions feel like little more than background characters, which makes for a less enjoyable experience. Where the story may fall short at times to keep things interesting, or the new gameplay style may pull from the experience, bringing another player in to add a little extra chaos to the mix helps revitalize the fun. The Lara Croft Collection co-op feature is not only something that is well done and runs smoothly, but it is definitively the way this collection should be experienced. ![]() With all that being said, the biggest appeal for many players of these games is the co-op mode, and they aren’t likely to be disappointed here. ![]()
